Jardin Majorelle is an enchanting twelve-acre botanical garden that offers a serene escape from Marrakech's bustling medina. Created over forty years by French painter Jacques Majorelle, this living artwork combines modernist architecture with lush vegetation from five continents. The garden's most striking feature is its use of "Majorelle Blue"—an intense cobalt shade that Majorelle used throughout the property. This vivid blue creates a stunning contrast against the greenery, golden yellows, and deep purples used in the buildings. The color has become so iconic that it's now officially registered as Majorelle Blue. Beyond its visual beauty, the garden houses over 300 plant species from around the world. Bamboo groves tower overhead, creating natural green tunnels. Cacti gardens display hundreds of varieties in surreal arrangements. Water features reflect the sky and buildings, while paths wind through palm groves and beneath bougainvillea-covered pergolas. In 1980, fashion designers Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé purchased and restored the garden, saving it from being converted into a hotel complex. Today, it stands as a monument to their vision and Majorelle's artistic legacy.
Historical Significance
Jacques Majorelle began creating the garden in 1923 and opened it to the public in 1947. After his death in 1962, the garden fell into disrepair until YSL and Bergé's restoration in 1980. YSL's ashes were scattered here after his death in 2008.
Visitor Experience
The garden includes the Berber Museum showcasing North African artifacts, the YSL Museum celebrating the designer's life and work, and a charming café. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon for softer light and smaller crowds.
